What “medical tourism” in Korea actually means
Medical tourism is not one type of appointment. International patients visit Korea for health screening, dentistry, dermatology, ophthalmology, fertility services, rehabilitation, surgery and other care. The right planning process is the same regardless of specialty: confirm the provider, understand the proposed care and costs, arrange language access, and plan what happens after you leave Korea.
According to the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI), approximately 1.17 million foreign patients from 202 countries received medical services in Korea in 2024. That scale makes an orderly process especially important: international-patient services vary by institution, language and specialty.
Step 1: Find a registered provider, then check the right details
Use the official Medical Korea directory to filter by region, hospital type, specialty and available interpretation. Registration is a useful baseline for international-patient services; it is not a promise that every provider offers the same clinical service, schedule or language support.

Step 2: Ask for a written plan and a complete estimate
Ask the international patient center to put the proposed visit in writing. An estimate should separate the consultation, tests, procedure or treatment, anesthesia if relevant, medicines, supplies, admission, interpretation, follow-up and any optional items. Ask which part is an estimate and which part is fixed, what could change the final cost, and how cancellation or rescheduling works.

Medical Korea lists a short-term medical-tourism visa, C-3-3, for visits of up to 90 days and G-1-10 for longer treatment or recuperation. Visa eligibility and document requirements are individual. For a direct application, official guidance lists items such as a passport copy, diagnosis document, an appointment or treatment confirmation from a Korean medical institution, and proof of financial support; the embassy or consulate may request more.

Step 4: Build recovery time into the itinerary
Keep medical appointments separate from packed sightseeing days. For any procedure, ask the treating team when it is appropriate to fly, exercise, drink alcohol, or resume work; these decisions depend on your own condition and care plan.
